AL69X vs AL124X alternators! Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Thu, 23 Jun 2016 17:22:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So I've been swapping the alternator in our 1993 900s, and the old one was a AL69X and the new one is an AL124X. From searching this bb, sounds like the 124X is the correct one, I know the 69X was put in by the dealer in about 2001.
The differences seem minor (eg voltage regulator is in a different orientation), but the 69X does not have a spline, whereas the 124X does have a tapered spline, rectangular cross section. The fan has a rounded notch (which did not fit, so I squared it). Pulley and washer/plate fit with square notches.
The only gotcha - the spline does not run to the base of the spindle, so the fan and washer/plate can spin freely (not captured by the spline). I think I should fit a ~2mm thick washer as a spacer down there. Anyone familiar with the stack up of parts on the AL124X in a c900? Is there a washer usually at the bottom?
I also wonder if perhaps the AL69X spindle was slightly tapered, as the fan and pulley worked fine even without a spline... (and there was no notch or missing spline)...
thanks!
