On my '86 900S there is a red wire that goes to a connector attached to the side of the compressor with a clip, from there it goes into the AC clutch. That's the one. You can disconnect the wire there and run a test wire from the AC clutch side of the connector.
Note that when doing this it is bad practice to make your last connection directly to the + side of the battery. Batteries produce hydrogen and there is a chance a spark might set something off.
Another item to check: there is a diode in the wiring leading to the clutch that prevents spikes from backfeeding into the computer. If that's blown the AC won't turn on. (The hotwire test for the clutch will still work though since that bypasses the diode.)
