Recharge A/C w/o vacuum -- wasteful or dangerous? Posted by InnateTech [Email] (#650) [Profile/Gallery] (more from InnateTech) on Sat, 6 Aug 2016 13:32:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hey all -- so, the A/C in my 90 c900 turbo vert is not blowing cold anymore.
It's sort of barely cold when I first start running it, but pretty soon the air coming out of the vents is at ambient temperature, or warmer.
I've sourced the correct coolant (ahem) on eBay, and have two cans in hand. But after calling every specialty radiator shop in the L.A. area I could find, no one is willing to do the service and recharge w/o a conversion.
My understanding is that the problem with DIYing this is that normally one would pull a vacuum before recharging, meaning that without special equipment whatever coolant is left in the system is discharged into the air.
Since I don't have the proper vacuum anyway, is it sane to just add some coolant w/o evacuating the system? And only use as many canisters as the system can take without excess? (So nothing has to be dumped afterwards?)
I understand that if the system stopped blowing cold because of a leak rather than just using up the original charge, the added coolant will be wasted. But am I risking significant damage to the system itself if I add coolant without first pulling a vacuum?
And also, the kit I was sent with the cans has only has one gauge. If I proceed on my own, is it advisable to get one of the kits with a gauge for both sides of the system?
I'd really rather not convert, based on how it went with my old mans c900 when I was a kid. The A/C didn't blow nearly as cool.
(Pardon me if I asked this before, I'm not finding it -- ordered this stuff a while back and never got around to it.)
