I had some persistent knocking on slow sharp turns in my '87 900 a couple of years ago. I pulled the axle, disassembled the CV joint (that was a first for me at the time), cleaned out the old grease and packed with new grease. Installed the new CV boot after further packing the joint and I was surprised; the noise was largely gone after that. The CV joint had more than 300K on it at the time.
I did it on the side of my driveway in one day. If you have access to a decent mechanic there in Fairbanks, they should be able to do this service.
Lotsa stories in this forum about sketchy to failed aftermarket axle replacements (though I know some people have had success) but I'd vote for rebuilding your current (original) equipment.
