Noise may be starter or chewed up flywheel ring gear Posted by walt [Email] (#2707) [Profile/Gallery] (more from walt) on Fri, 21 Oct 2016 05:30:11 In Reply to: Re: Starter wouldn't disengage. Worn ring gear teeth in a few spots will result in occasional grinds when the worn spot lines up with starter pinion gear. With a manual tranny, one can push car in 3rd, and release the clutch with ignition ON to start car. Parking so that car faces downhill makes this easy. Ring gear fix is flywheel replacement.
