If you are seriously interested in the car, you should do a through look over wrt rust. Pull carpets (floors can rust from inside even if the interior is beautiful), check fenders especially. Often you will find cosmetic rust that, while not structural, is a PITA... you might be looking at a fair bit of bodywork or not... depends... but usually if one thing is rusty, something else is also.
Sounds like the car could be salvageable, and at the very least should be a great source of parts for a good body with a bad motor/tranny (aka southern car).
Look up photos from Jon Williams if you are keen on getting into restorations. His work is gold! DougM also...
Once you get it sorted, oil spray the car annually. Makes a huge difference!
