yup, that was my point... if there is rust in one part of the car, it's probably elsewhere also. I'm fighting this on my winter beater, but structurally, it is still ok. Cosmetically, not great. Not too many years left though... I redid a fender this fall, floors a few years ago...
The main point is: whatever car you want to keep, oil spray it!!! The parts of my winter beater (1989 c900) that were thoroughly soaked with oil look pretty much brand new. It's the stuff that either wasn't sprayed properly, or the paint got damaged... that is where rust set in... and once it starts, it is very hard to stop! The original paint on the c900 was excellent, so an unpainted car in good condition now could last a long long time, especially with oil spray and a low salt diet. Not all of them are rotting, and especially verts can be garage queens... there are still good verts around the NE (from affluent owners who used them as fun sunny day summer cars), just very few SPGs... of course the prices of these are high now and increasing.
