did all of that--- removed belt + idler pulley assembly, noise goes away. The compressor pulley spins freely by hand, but it is hard to judge whether it has a slightly rough feel to it. AC clutch assembly looks ok (has proper gap from pulley when not energized). So I am guessing it is one of the bearings inside of the compressor, possibly the main pulley bearing? All belts are pretty new (a few thousand miles), but I will change out the AC belt just in case. And the noise isn't continuous, it come and goes, it is less when the clutch is engaged--- cold air output is fine.
I went through old postings on this issue, seems like just trying to change the pulley bearing is worth a try? The majority seemed to think that replacing the entire compressor was the way to go... but all that is available now are pretty expensive rebuilt units ($300-700). Not sure of quality of these rebuilds?
It's the original Seiko Seiki SS170PSS unit on the car, 225K mi, maybe I am asking too much of a 29-yr old compressor? It still runs R12, system was last serviced (leaky hoses/ fittings, recharged freon 7-8 years ago).
