I'm not sure the ejector pump can fall out. The book shows a couple of tabs that have to be bent back and then it has to be turned 90 degrees clockwise to be removed. Still on the possibilities list are 1) the hose came off the ejector pump, 2) something is actually cracked or broken, 3) the pickup screen on the bottom of the ejector pump intermittently is sucking up some piece of debris, stopping the intake flow, possibly from the broken fuel level sender, or 4) the screen is clogged.
The Bosch external filter was changed a few years back, and probably has less than 30,000 miles on it.
I keep going through the symptoms of the failure, trying to make some sense out of it. It first failed about 15 miles into the parkway (a passenger-cars-only limited-access highway) trip, steady at about 65 mph, with about 11 gallons in the tank, on a mild upgrade. Several attempts at restarting found it running for 3 seconds and shutting off. It restarted and ran normally about 15 minutes later. We diverted the rest of the journey to local commercial routes, with stoplights and generally lower speed limits. It died three or four more times in 25 miles, restarting each time in 5 or 10 minutes. About 10 miles before the end of the trip, I topped up the tank. It took 6 gallons. It didn't die again. Since then, it's been used only lightly, but without failing again.
The problem with the fuel sender is it died almost a year ago. Electrical tests showed the meter and low-fuel light to be just fine. It's the sender that died. Several weeks ago, the sender started sending intermittent signals to the panel, usually right after topping up the tank. I'm guessing pieces are floating around inside the tube. It actually has me worried. I know it's not a lot of current, but with the needle getting pinned and dropping to zero several times in a few seconds, and the light coming on randomly, I've been thinking I should disconnect it just to prevent any sparks, just in case.
There's a lot of rust on this car now, but in terms of ground points, it only seems to be the main one in front. Still, if something is killing the power to the pump, the symptoms might be similar. Running normally after topping the tank could just be a coincidence.
