that foam is awful... living in the saltbelt, ours collects moisture all winter and will never actually dry out. The 1989 floors rusted from the inside out due to this. When I repaired the floors, I ripped out all the foam and tossed it. The car is louder now, but I'm not sure that there is a decent material that will not add too much weight and perform the same function without having the same moisture collecting/trapping effect... basically, if you've ever looked at moisture and houses, you need 1 vapour barrier on the warm side of a wall assembly. 2 vapour barriers and you trap moisture and cause rot... so that foam has a rubber layer (vapour barrier) over foam, over metal floor (vapour barrier). Massive failure!
I have been meaning to dig into our 1993's floors before it is too late!
There are rubber mat products that will damp sound, and are waterproof... the problem is if water gets between the rubber and the metal floor... it may never escape... if you can somehow adhere it perfectly so it is a seamless water tight connection, you might be ok. Those products though tend to be smelly (offgass), heavy, and I'm not sure about the fire rating either (and also the requirements in that regard for car interiors).
good luck. If you find something great, please post!
