I like the idea of LEDs in general, but they *largely* don't pan out for headlights right now. I think JW Speaker is probably the company with the most solid LED offerings, and they start at about $200 per side (assuming you can run single-unit low/high) and offer average performance in terms of brightness over distance.
I think people get confused by light, which is easy to do. You get sucked up in brightness, or detail, or range and fail to realize the actual gains or losses in performance. The brain tells you all sorts of things based on assumptions it makes, and they aren't always true. ;)
I enjoy the second comment on the ebay auction linked in thread you posted:
"I knew going in that the LED option left some down the road visibility to be desired, so no big deal there."
