Have 89 TC that just did head gasket on and had strange idle.
Took valve cover off – only had 14 rollers between sprocket marks.
After correcting this, I played around with several positions and when the sprocket marks are perpendicular to head, then both cam marks are slightly towards the exhaust side – 1 mm. No slack between cam sprockets
If I rotate both cam sprockets 1 tooth, I get the position of mark being slightly ahead or toward the intake side which everyone says is correct but I have to turn intake cam and hold it or it just reverts backward leaving a lot of slack between the sprockets. Is there supposed to be resistance on that intake side when rotating the camshaft?
This is what Townsend says:
“You can double check the cams by looking at the mark on them and the pointer on the first bearing cap. They should be close, but often aren't dead on. Using these marks alone to time the engine sometimes leads to a cam being a tooth off and a rough idle will result. I have yet failed to get an engine in time correctly by using the marks on the gears perpendicular to the head. The small radius at the cam leaves too much room for error where the line on the bigger diameter gear is both easier to see and has less room for error”
Tensioner at 12.5mm
Any thoughts?
