My 85 SPG has the old style timing chain tensioner and very likely the original timing chain with close to 300,000 miles on it. I can't be sure it's the original chain but I suspect from the past history of repair to this car (or lack therof) it most likely is. The chain makes noise on startup and once the engine is warm it rattles. With a cold engine no rattle. I know I need to remove the valve cover and check the chain for stretch, and also check the chain pad in the cover. I'd like to go ahead and replace the timing chain tensioner and upgrade it to the new style before having to do the much bigger job to replace the chain. Aside from removing the AC compressor and bracket out of the way to get to the tensioner, are they any other pointers anyone can give, or things to beware of with upgrading to the new style tensioner? While I want to replace the timing chain and guides eventually, I'd like to try the tensioner and valve cover pad first. When I have some more time I'll be removing the engine and will replace the chain and all the guides then...but I'm hoping to get some more time out of the current chain until such time as that can happen. Of course if I find upon removing the valve cover that the chain is already stretched to the replacement point then engine removal will have to happen right away. I'd rather stay away from the 'roll-in master link' method especially since I need to remove the motor anyway to do some other things. Any thoughts? Thanks!
