I don't really recommend this, but if you took a new check valve ( you should get one in addition to the fuel pump ) and just disconnect the fitting from the pump that goes forward to the engine, insert the check valve fitting into the pump with a hose going overboard into an approved gasoline container and turn on the pump, see what happens. No smoking.......
When you get that pump lifted up and out, gander down at what's in the tank, I bet you'll find some stuff in the bottom, probably not much, but none the less, debris that will stop a pump in a heartbeat without question.
I've heard of people finding the remnants of two fuel sending units floating around down there.....obviously, left behind by gravel monkeys that don't care.
