Jumper cables is a solid idea. I would personally try three spots - I would ground from the battery negative directly to the body, and then I would try from the lifting lug on the top of the motor to the body, and then I would try the alternator case to the body. You need bare metal on the body, you don't want a painted surface. If you can reach it, the grounding bolt at the bottom of the radiator would be a good place, but that may not be reachable with jumper cables. My backup location is typically the hood hinge.
The point about trying three locations is to try and establish a weak link. Normally just battery to body and engine to body is enough, but c900s are weird with their rubber bushings on the alternator so you also need to check the alternator case to ensure that's properly grounded.
