All excellent more detailed instructions so a conclusion can be derived.
Make note that if the car is rusty, then adding multiple jumpers to complete the circuit back to the battery isn't a bad idea.
I have had several incidents that were resolved by making more solid connections on the alternator. The field post looked and felt like it was tight on the connector....not so......the nut had gone all the way down on the threads, and stopped, leaving the connector to be "slightly" loose. The battery would never quite get recharged fully, kind of a degrading situation that would lead to a jumpstart.
Then also the starter would drag because the large wire from the starter to the alternator was slightly loose, undetected from appearance, difficult to reach......one swivel socket to tighten and eureka, a months long problem solved......
