Directional malfunction

My 1990 900's right directional lights blink rapidly on the dash panel and the front turn signal, however, the rear does not light at all.
I installed a separate ground wire years ago to remove that dashboard "glow" which worked. I cleaned that up at the rear, but still no light.....it really didn't need any cleaning though.
I used a continuity tester and the tester did light, so no short and the bulb circuit board has clean contacts all around.
By the way, I swapped the reverse bulb with the directional bulb (1156s I believe, single filament) and both bulbs are good.
Could this be the turn signal or flasher relay? Could it cause half of one side to go bad, but leave the left side working as it should? If so, how is the black plastic heat duct removed under the steering wheel to get to the relay....looks a little fragile? Europrats shows a 3-prong relay....is that what I would expect to replace or could it be different?
Thanks for any answers.
