Can't believe I missed this, but my exhaust manifold is missing 2 studs (closest to the turbo) and one nut (farthest from the turbo) and it leaks pretty bad. I'm thinking this is where my exhaust/sulfur/gas smells come from when I've been adjusting the fuel/air mixture. I put 2 studs in and managed to get a nut on the other stud but it still leaks, although it's better. The car still coughs... Could a leak of this size create my problems?
I know I'll need an exhaust manifold gasket, but what other gaskets should I get too? I figure there's one between the exhaust manifold and the turbo. But what about from the turbo to the exhaust elbow that contains the O2 sensor? When I removed the original elbow I didn't see any remnants of a gasket but there is a leak between the elbow and turbo now.
Another item, when I went to connect the shopvac to the intake side as Saabina suggested, I removed the AMM and connected the blower side of the shopvac there, however, when I switched it on, oil immediately began spurting out from the filler tube. Have I blown some seals somewhere, or is this normal and I should check for vacuum leaks with the engine running instead?
