When I bought my 85 SPG two years ago it arrived to me missing the catalytic converter. I replaced the entire exhaust with a kit from Eeuroparts that had the Magnaflow Catalytic Converter. At that time I also replaced the O2 sensor, the Water Temp Sensor, adjusted the AMM for 380 Ohms, replaced most of the ignition components (cap, rotor, plugs) And adjusted timing to 16 btdc as per the bentley. The car runs great and consistently gets about 23 mpg city. Just recently I started hearing an exhaust rattle, I checked heat shields and tightened all brackets, etc., it was still there. This morning I removed the Catalytic converter to find that although the interior ceramics are all still in one peice, the entire inner unit on the cat slides back and fourth and is loose inside of the shell, causing the rattle. I'm pretty much at a loss as to why it failed in only 2 years when the car seems to run so well. It's not running rich, doesn't burn oil, doesn't run hot, and everything seems to be like it should. Aside from just a bad Cat from the factory I'm stumped. Any other ideas?
