Easiest way to check is with an electronic refrigerant sniffer if you have access to one.
There should be very little leakage if everything is in good condition. I redid the AC system on my '86 900S shortly after purchasing it in 2002 and have not had to add any refrigerant since then. (Realistically it has to be down a little at this point but it still works quite well. So for now I'm leaving well enough alone.)
