You mentioned wanting to restore your air conditioning. I suggest not converting to R134A, but using butane/propane instead. This is what I use in my car. Unlike R134A, it is fully chemically compatible with R12 oil and components, resulting in a system that works like the original R12 system - better than any R134A converted system I've ever used. Also, as a chemist by trade I can say, these halogenated hydrocarbons give me the heebie jebies. Give me alkanes any day. They're approved for auto A/C in other countries now anyway, and the amounts are so small that the safety risk is negligible. I use a mix of propane and isobutane (basically backpacking stove fuel + bbq gas) in mine. Works great with R12 oil. You can get it pre-mixed under the name Duracool or Enviro-Safe. I prefer to make my own blend from MSR Isopro and BBQ gas.
I suggest a leak test beforehand, because the old gas got out somehow. You might find you have a bad hose as well and can save work by doing everything at once. Often the manifold hose leaks at the joints where it's crimped onto the aluminum pipe. If your car is older than about '88 or '89, the compressor main seal could also be suspect, as older compressors used a lip seal. Fortunately, with an old R12 system, you can fill it with compressed air or propane from a bbq tank and then spray the hoses with dilute dish soap and look for bubbles much the way you'd diagnose a flat tire. No need for expensive equipment.
