There are eight fasteners that do as you describe. However, underneath the thick padded part of the trim are some additional fasteners. Two of them, in the corners, can be easily pried away from the hatch. The other four will NOT pry out (easily). See pic.
I really don't see any way to remove these fasteners, nor do I see a way to get the trim panel pulled away from them without tearing the holes that they fit through. The padded part of the panel covers the fasteners, so there's no way to access them with the panel in place. Either I'm missing something here, or there's just no way to remove and replace that panel without doing some damage to it.
