The signal when turning off it normal, that's the plug burn off feature. No pulse when cranking means no tach signal. That you smell gas is kinda weird. I would move that noid light to the fuel injectors and see if they pulse when cranking. I would probably pull the fuel pump fuse when running this test to avoid flooding out the cylinders. If the injectors pulse but the DIC does not, then you have a WEIRD problem. If neither do, then you have a tach signal issue. :) 1/4" sounds like too much - I think the air gap is supposed to be just a few mm. Makes me think I should go measure mine - I was planning on starting it for the first time this weekend. :)
