A 1998? Maybe you should post in the New Gen forum, rather than the Classic one. They might have more insight. I had a problem similar to that with my car, which turned out to be an air leak in the boot between the air-mass meter and the throttle body. No idea what your car looks like under the hood, but that's one thing to check if you're under there. Make sure anything in the air flow is properly seated and clamped. In my case, they had folded under the rubber boot's lip where you couldn't see it, and no amount of tightening the clamp would help. Also, being permanently creased, it would never seal again. Had to replace it. Ring out the error codes from the computer. If you're finding "lean mixture," that might be a clue.
