My experiment seems to work fine - I replaced the factory lock module with a DEI 451M. Took very little time.
So, the factory lock doodad is just a pair of relays in a black case with a Saab-specific connector. It's nothing fancy. Inside, it looks something like this:
The DEI 451M is the same thing, just in a tiny box made to (I'm sure) lower specs. ;) But it's $10 brand new, hard to get mad at it! You can buy it from Amazon - if you use this link TSN gets a tiny slice of the proceeds: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009SZHR4/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0009SZHR4&linkCode=as2&tag=thesaabnetwork
The 451M has seven wires attached to it:
Purple = actuator power
Tiny Red = relay coil power
Brown+black and White+black = actuator ground
Green+Black and Blue+black = actuator output (lock/unlock, depending on polarity)
Tiny Blue = relay coil ground (lock or unlock) aka trigger
Tiny Green = relay coil ground (lock or unlock) aka trigger
Everything you need!
The factory lock relay is under the dash, above the passenger's feet. It has six wires:
Yellow = relay coil ground (lock or unlock) aka trigger
Green+white = = relay coil ground (lock or unlock) aka trigger
Black= = actuator ground
Green = actuator power and relay coil power
Violet and Brown+white = actuator output (lock/unlock, depending on polarity)
Real easy to see how this goes! :)
451M -> Factory
Purple and Tiny Red -> Green
Brown+black and White+black -> Black
Green+Black -> Brown+white
Blue+black -> Violet
Tiny Blue -> Yellow or Green/white*
Tiny Green -> Yellow or Green/white*
* A note: In my installation, I ditched the switch in the driver's door and replaced it with a motor, so I don't have a switch to know which trigger locks and which trigger unlocks. You will need to experiment - try tiny blue->green/white and tiny green -> yellow and to see if the locks are in sync; if they're backwards (locking the driver's door unlocks the locks, etc.), just reverse them. :)
The way I did it was to order Saab #4115580 from eeuroparts ($10) which is a connector housing that matches the plug on the factory relay unit along with six Mouser #571-964304-1 which are the terminals that go in the housing. That way it's all plug & play - no splicing or cutting or butt connectors. You will need a standard terminal crimping tool to assemble in this way, however. (You can get an inexpensive one for about $20, such as: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BQWO5RU/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00BQWO5RU&linkCode=as2&tag=thesaabnetwork)
As I mentioned, I eliminated the switch in the driver's door. It's easy to do - just replace the switch with a motor! You will need one of the two-terminal housings to swap into the harness inside the door - attach the green & yellow wires there to the motor, leave the black wire unused. Then, when attaching the 451M to your factory wiring, combine the green+white and yellow wires with the violet and brown+white wires. You can install a switch in the center console to lock & unlock the doors using the small blue and green wires from the 451M. Or, just install a keyless entry system. As long as you have an '85 or later car it's a *snap* to do once you've done this modification... The hardest part being taking out the passenger seat so you can extend the SaabGuard harness forwards, or the lock relay harness backwards. I'll post more on that in a couple days.
On that note,
