Some minute amount of play in the top bearing is normal. Not a lot though. And I don't know how much you'd feel with the clutch shaft still installed.
Changing the bearing is hard. You will need to undo the bottom nut (un-peen the nut first, which requires a skillful hand with a die grinder, or if you can find an impact wrench that's thin and powerful enough you can maybe just wrench it off). Then getting the snap ring is also hard (both on and off. You'll want some snap ring pliers, and you can't really see the thing while you're doing it, unless you drop the A/C condenser and look through the radiator). Then you slide both sprockets off simultaneously. You can change the chains and bearing at this point. You'll need to punch or press the old bearing out and the new one in. You can do this with a hammer and some sockets, but be careful. The new bearing part number is BR9. You should be able to get one for less than $15 because it's the same bearing as spec'd for Jeep axles.
Sometimes in transmissions that have had overheat or oil issues, the bearing will begin to spin on its aluminum mount arbor. This might be the play you're feeling. If this is the case, you'll need to swell up that shaft by stippling with a punch and then mount the bearing using Permatex or Loctite Bearing Mount for Worn Parts. This worked for me once. Be careful, go slow, think about what you're doing.
Given the advanced mileage on the transmission, you might be better off seeking a replacement gearbox to have in waiting, rather than messing around with this one. Usually the pinion bearings will give out before anything else does, and you can't replace these in-car!
