You could put it in two gears (usually reverse and something else, I forget what I always did, but it says in the transmission service manual which is available for download on central saab or some site like that). This would lock it. Having it in 4th or 5th and trying with a long pipe to remove that nut won't cut it. My favorite cheat doesn't involve removing side covers and subjecting gears to static torque (maybe bad). I take a piece of steel tube, drill two holes in it for M8 bolts, then put one in the clutch shaft and the other in one of the slot-holes in the top gear. Presto I have a lever on the top gear. Make it at least 4 feet long. Then breaker bar and pipe extension on the bottom gear. Scissor them levers with all your muscle and you'll get the nut off.
But seriously, better not to worry about the bearing. It is a can of worms. I'm a hobbyist too - except I've done this job a few times to install and remove the coveted #8 primary gearset I have, to keep it with me as I bought and sold and drove different 900 cars. Once I messed it up and installed an old primary gearset with a bad top bearing. Little to no play, but it spun and wore down the aluminum arbor and I had to swell it with a punch and apply that bearing mount goop. In the wet December snow. In the dark. Ugh. The car has done 50k since then.
I only do this in-car if I want to change primary chain ratio (you probably already have #7 gears, and #8 gears are rare/expensive in the USA so no need since you have the best you can get). You can use a mirror through the inspection hole on the front of the chain case while the car is running (don't run it with the chain case open, there will be limited lubrication to the rest of the transmission not to mention all the oil that will fly everywhere) and visually inspect the bearing to see if it's wobbling or if the inner race is spinning on that aluminum arbor. It should be easy to see at idle.
Is your clutch slipping?
