I'd suggest trying the drain plug. On some majority-British sites, there seem to be many more block drain plug casting issues, which leads me to believe that the problem is cultural: British people use tap water in their cooling systems. Americans don't seem to do that as much. So if you're in America, I would suggest trying the block drain. I've removed at least seven of these plugs on different cars throughout New England, suffering from various levels of neglect, and never had a bad one. Plus, if it's bad, wouldn't you rather find out about it in the comfort of your garage or driveway, and not when you're stuck in traffic on a toll bridge with no breakdown lane?
There will still be water in the block even after this. Probably about half a gallon. Just mix n go. I usually do a final flush with distilled water just because I'm paranoid.
