My impression was that 9 times out of 10, the CEL in these cars is a bad O2 sensor. I've never had one come on for any other reason (including in my 1989 NA with original ECU), but I agree, check the codes first. Hopefully it is something less painful to replace than the O2 sensor! Or hopefully BHJ does not live in the salt belt at least!
I should add, that with the O2 sensor going, the CEL can be intermittent at first, and I think I have noticed this also on cold mornings in the past...
