Oil spray helps increase the lifetime with winter driving, but I just took our 1989 off the road this year. Body was rusting beyond the point of bringing back to nice condition, and we broke a drivers side upper control arm so along with a so-so transmission, it just wasn't worth fixing. Lots of parts though for my other c900 that no longer sees winter. Winter up here is very hard on cars! I just placed an eeuroparts order for our 2 9-5's for "little stuff" that is breaking in the freezing cold (a blower, cooling system parts, etc).
A vert is probably a safer bet in that regard as they tend to not be used in snow so much (even though they are fine for it, they were usually not bought for that purpose). So yes, if it is cheap and in decent condition and you like to DIY, then sure it's worth buying. I think it is good to have a second car as a backup though so you are not reliant on it. You should budget something to make things right and bring it back to daily driver status. There will be more wrong than just the messed up ignition, I can guarantee that! But most is worth fixing, and if nothing else the parts are of value so better than having it go to the crusher...
