That price of +/- $1000 + labor for a new top is way off. Black fabric Stayfast or German tops are $284-320 on Fleabay. Rear window panel is $269 if needed (and often it isn't needed). The headliner if you want a new one is $149, but these rarely require replacement - they tend to fade a bit, but fabric "paint" by duplicolor freshens that up easily. Even if you replaced everything, that's $702-738. Yes it's expensive to get new fabric installed on your existing frame (several hundred $ - never had to do it.

If you see one in a junkyard that is in good condition, you can buy the whole top including the mechanism and hydraulic rams for very little. I paid $150 for a nearly brand new top and mechanism and it is hanging from the ceiling of my garage awaiting a need. It takes no special skill to install a top and frame (as long as it is attached to the frame). The top on my vert was OK (not new) when i bought it 5 years ago, and still shows no sign of serious wear.

I've owned 2 verts (wrecked the first one) over the past ten years and never needed to replace the top. Its a consideration in selecting a car (make sure the top is in good condition), but these should last over a decade.

Rocket is right that you should treat buying a vert differently than a hard top. The floor boards are more prone to rust because the car is not as tight, but the 900 vert is a joy to drive and with a little care, the cost should not break the bank.
