Yes, it has in several of the post '87 spindles I have had. The bearing shuttles inside the housing, when the direction reverses, the bearing bangs on the other side, therefore the clunk.
I've never had early brakes, on my '81 and '87 they were changed over to late model, so I don't know the problems associated with the caliper reversing loads movement. However, shimming the bearing in the housing has solved the clunk in the 88 and up spindles I have had to rework.
