It could be something mechanical other than what has already been mentioned.
I too had a strange sometimes-stuck ignition for a while in a car that had lost its reverse lockout. It would only get stuck on, and never stuck off. I assumed the car just really wanted to keep driving. It made for some awkward times at gas stations.
It turned out that the ignition gear that was attached to the shifter reverse lock tab had been broken off by someone who shoved the shifter out of reverse at some point while the key was off. The gear was thus no longer spring loaded by the little hair spring in there, and free to turn out of mesh when the ignition was on, blocking the mechanism and rendering me unable to shut off the ignition.
If I cornered hard (or even due to vibration), the gear would swing out of mesh and block the mechanism. If I corned hard the other way, the gear would swing back in and the mechanism would turn again. This made for more awkward times at gas stations, with me autocrossing in reverse to try to get the thing back into mesh (and prove my theory without dismantling the center console). A new lockout tab gear from a junkyard was the cure. All I had to do was dismantle the console and pull the housing (3x tri-winged nuts and disconnect the shifter I think), replacing the gear on the workbench (just a few snap rings and pins). No need to remove the lock cylinder.
