What you suggest is a very good possibility.

This is my first classic 900 and the woman I bought it from neglected to tell me that the tranny should be in reverse to properly remove the key. I only learned it a day or so later when I was reading the manual. I've done that ever since, but the collar on the shift lever doesn't really move much, so I supect the lockout was already mangled when I got the car.

I'm not sure I want to tackle it, but I've found at least one shop somewhat near me that claims to know how to work on classic 900's.

I'll report back on what the problem was once it's fixed.
