Air Mass Meter or MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. Black plastic cylinder about 2" in diameter located between the air filter and intake manifold with a wiring harness plug. The AMM tells your fuel injection computer how much air is entering the engine. If you unplug it BEFORE trying to start and it runs in 'limp home' mode, then you may have a faulty AMM unit or some related wiring issue. If you have not already checked, a thorough examination of all your intake manifold connections and hoses needs to be done. Some connections and components may look fine and in fact be broken, cracked or dislodged. Free air entering the engine after the AMM will be unmeasured and disrupt the air/fuel mix. As an example, there is a black rubber grommet in the intake manifold with a vacuum hose attached which can be cracked or weakened by oil exposure and either pop out or be pulled into the manifold resulting in a large air leak causing the very symptoms you describe.
These are only suggestions and there may be another problem(s) but this is a good place to start. Good Luck!
