The 3/4" (?) bar stock works great. I bent mine into a U to engage the ring, and then use a long screwdriver inserted "across" the U to turn it. Prior to that, I've used a BIG flat screwdriver and a hammer. As long as you hold the screwdriver steady and keep it against the base of the ribs you should be fine - I've never broken a ring. There is also the PVC pipe tool - buy a giant (4"?) PVC pipe section and cut appropriately spaced grooves with a Dremel or hack saw.
Of course, the actual legit tool is only about $30 - CTA 3700 or Lisle 63000
