Agreed, this was the principal reason for my post. As I'd noted, there had been some reservations posted along the same lines earlier and I did not find any evidence that anyone had actually done this and posted about it. At this point, there doesn't seem to be much choice in whether to do this or not (other than putting a used power booster in), since there seems little or no chance that 87-89 boosters will become available. From what the guy at Power Brake Exchange told me, the 87-89 booster's diaphragm is fragile and installing a used one is likely to just be forestalling the inevitable.
I can't do the math either, but the fact that Saab engineers used the earlier calipers with the later booster suggests that the opposite combination (later calipers with the early booster) is a viable solution. I have new rear calipers, but I think that my front calipers are original equipment (car had 86K on it when I bought it and I have all the service records). If I am going to blow out a caliper from over-pressuring it, I suspect that I'll find out soon. So far everything feels fine. I'll certainly post if I have any problems down the road.
