I looked at the shop manual and think I've found a way to defeat the light without pulling the bulb.
As you said, the upshift indicator is completely controlled by the computer. However, it uses a temperature switch, a throttle switch and a fifth gear lockout switch as part of that circuit.
If the fifth gear lockout switch operates like the transmission switches on my Volvo 1800 and TR6, it either completes a ground or provides power to a part of the circuit that bypasses the light. If it's a ground, then it's possible to simply attach the incoming wire. If it completes a circuit, that can be permanently done by connecting the two switch leads together.
My only remaining question is whether either of those could hurt the operation of the car, but I don't think so because they're both equivalent electrically to pulling the bulb. What do you think.
I can't get to my car right now but will report back once I look at that switch.
