I think I'd agree with the general direction of this being a fuel issue and not an ignition issue. 8v CIS cars require some unusual equipment to really test fueling - you may be best off finding a shop that has this equipment available. Any old Saab shop, obviously, but most German cars (VW, Mercedes, Porsche) also did.
In my pretty limited experience, running for a while then dying is indicative of the warmup regulator failing. My 5-door (when it still had an 8v) would make it to the same intersection every morning before giving me problems. If I could power through it I'd make it to work, but if I got stopped at light or was inattentive I'd have to pull over and wait a bit. :)
