#1 is at 10-11 O'clock looking at front of the distributor.
C Myles explained it: "The cylinders are numbered 1-2-3-4 from front to back (front being by the firewall and back being by the radiator). Firing order is 1-3-4-2 and distributor rotation is anti-clockwise when viewed from in front of the car. Tower #1 should be the one at about 10 or 11 o'clock (viewed from in front of the car) so the next tower in the anti-clockwise rotation (at about 7 o'clock) would be wired to cylinder #3 and the next one anti-clockwise (about 4 o'clock) would be #4. The last tower (about 2 o'clock) is for cylinder #2."
