I've found that the gear on the end of the trip odometer often has just slipped out sideways so that it is not making good contact with the worm gear and can be simply pushed back in and a dab of fast setting epoxy on the end will cure it (both holds it in place laterally and prevents it from rotating).
The other gear that goes bad is on the end of the main odometer and it is a PITA. I fixed mine by using a 1/32 inch drill bit on my dremel drilling a hole at a 45 degree angle so that I partially nick the main shaft it rotates on, then I cut a tiny little pin (from the back 1/4inch of the bit I used to drill with (use a dremel cutting blade for that. Don't drill all the way through and use only the tiniest amount of glue so that you don't glue this gear to the other gears - use tweazers and put the glue on the pin (the glue is only to hold the pin in).
Test things by putting a sharpened 1/4" dowel rod on your drill (like you'd sharpen a pencil) and use that to simulate the action of the rotating speedo cable.
