Hello,
Thank you for posting at TSN!
Ignition wire problems are typical, and may result in similar symptoms as mentioned in your post. In many cases, the old wire sets were able to contact the valve cover or another ignition wire which may compromise the wire jackets. The wire is now able to ground through the opening on the wire jacket and typically arcs to the metal valve cover or any nearby ground. The lack of ignition within the typical cylinder/s effected, the more fuel gathering within the cylinder before combustion. The enriched combustion may appear as a grey smoke at the exhaust. The odor within the engine compartment may have been a the burns at ignition wire short.
The new wire set should be checked for any wire or valve cover gasket contact and separated using the nylon SAAB ignition wire inserts.
Best of luck with your project!
Sincerely,
Gary K. at SWEDISH DYNAMICS,INC.
