Went by the California BAR's Referee Station this morning in my T5-converted 1985 SPG. Told them it was a hybridized 1994 Saab 900 engine (some parts c900, some parts NG900) and it should be smogged as a 1994 900 SE. I provided them the VIN from the junkyard car that donated most of the parts. They asked no further questions, and did not take the papers and printouts I had prepared with information about 2.0 16vT motors available in 1994, specifics on T5, or anything else. The only other thing I indicated is that I had spoken to the regional supervisor last year about the swap and he'd ok'd it in concept. That was it.
Two hours later they brought the car back with a BAR sticker in the fender, so my T5 SPG is 100% legal in the Great State of California.
The core of the "swap" is that in 1994 there were two cars called "900" and both had 2.0l, 16-valve, turbo engines with manual transmissions. By and large, the BAR treats these motors as equals and to a large degree they are interchangeable. Because it's <1996, you don't need a second O2 sensor, you don't need an OBDII cat, and you can basically do whatever you'd like to the intake - I have a gigantic open-air filter and a Jak Stoll FMIC... this is legal equipment on a "1994." It's really pretty straightforward.
I'm very happy this is now done... should make future smog checks much much easier - no AMM and no distributor to muck things up.
