Thank you for your recent post at TSN!

Since you bench tested this transmission, and found no 5th gear capabilities, the shift link coupling is prob. not your culprit to your current 5th gear engagement issues. Since SAAB added the 5th gear of the 900 transmissions at the primary drive housing, you should be very capable of resolving this problem without requiring removal of the transmission.

With the primary drive side cover removed, check that the 5th gear was installed properly. Also, check that the 5th gear retaining nut is fully tightened and peened. The nut may also be removed, 5th gear removed as well as the mesh, and collar. Although rare, we have heard cases of collar modifications/shortening/shimming to allow for a proper 5th gear selection upon reinstallation of these components once reinstalled.
