We found the first place the headgasket starts to leak is in the back or the firewall side. Starts with the oil, then progresses to an exchange of water to oil, or vice versa.
I bought the special spring compressor for the 16 valve head, never used it yet. You might think about just doing the valve guide seals along with the head gasket, it wouldn't add much cost, and not much extra time I'm told. I've not done it myself, as I leave that stuff to the machine shop.
So, my vote would be to try to make a difference on what you have first as it's easier to work on, and diagnose the engine in the car. If it doesn't do what you hope, then you know better what you have and once swapped out, the 85 engine is the known entity. And, for the heck of it, you could swap in the 85 exhaust cam to the 16 valve head you have if you believe in the cam timing improvement scenario.
