Check out the image link that I posted in my gallery a looooong time ago.
What happened was the chain tensioner was upside down, and allowed movement of the chain. The mechanic that build the transmission was a Saab trained dealer mechanic. The accidental incorrect placement of the tensioner was the cause. If your tensioner wasn't swapped, then it is safe to assume that the tensioner failed to do it's job in another way. My gearbox sounded like an english ( or is that british ) taxi, I knew there was something very wrong on a fresh rebuild.
