Fluid level OK? Idle speed too high? Changing fluid couldn't hurt. I think these need type "F" fluid, but you may want to double-check that. Maybe check trans mount at front of the car - I've had thunking noises up there on acceleration with manual trans and a bad mount. Also check inner CV joints and drivers for wear, they might be thunking and clunking around.
The C900 automatic transmission is based on the 1950s-1960s vintage Borg-Warner 3-speed used in Studebakers and Ramblers. (Ford also used a version as did many imports.) It was definitely getting a bit long in the tooth by the 1990s.
