Some good news is that when I got this car ~10 years ago, I replaced the '85 suspension with '90 suspension, and cleaned everything nearby in the process. The doghouses aren't spotless, but you can see paint and aren't afraid to stick your hand in. All the suspension components save the a-arm bushings are have less than 20k on them, and the rack has been fluid-less for 10+ years. Replacing the steering rack doesn't entail much work in and of itself.... and no mess! :)

Last night I managed to get the crank pulley off with minimal drama, so it's full steam ahead on at least the chain guide replacement. Unfortunately the only chain guides available these days are proparts, so hopefully that doesn't cause a problem :(

Yesterday I dropped the head off at the machine shop, and they called today to tell me is wrecked. Totally flat (+) but all eight exhaust valves "leak really bad." I have a perfect, fully rebuilt head in the garage, but I'm saving it for the end of the world so I guess I'll put the $$$ into rebuilding this one. Hopefully things don't get too bad - hopefully the valves themselves are good and all I'm looking at are new guides & a valve job.

Guess I'll go order

30543193 - oil pump oring
9321795 - cover gasket
30543193 - fms
7560253 - lower guide -> 21343505
8858276 - upper guide
8048670 - tensioner seal

water pump
power steering pump
power steering rack

now. Quick head gasket is now a $1000 job. I rule at Saabs.
