There are a couple approaches to making battery cables - the easy approach is to crimp the terminals and there's the right way (a crimping tool) and the wrong way (an impact-type tool). I have done the latter and the results are never durable. Several years ago I bought a big battery terminal crimping tool and the difference is night and day - totally factory quality!
The *other* approach is soldering. You can buy solder-type terminals and solder pellets and flux to make clean joints. You need a torch to use this approach and if you're not cautious can make a brittle joint. I like the crimping approach because results are consistent, but there's no reason you can't solder. IMHO, the easy button is hit up Remy Battery (they are nice people!) and order Fusion Solder terminals under the Quick Cable brand. They are high quality and easy to use - the flux and solder is built into the terminal - they cost about double ($5 vs $2) but are incredibly convenient. Remy also sells quality battery cable by the foot - it's more expensive than buying in bulk, but you don't need 100'... :) You need something like 6' of 2ga cable (battery to starter) and like 3' of 6ga cable (battery to junction) along with 1ga positive terminal. Easy. Then, run by a Harbor Freight and pick up a box of their marine grade (adhesive lined) heat shrink to protect the joints. It's a VERY sturdy assembly and would look very factory.
