Do you hear the fuel pump running? You can make it run with the car off by jumping the fuel pump relay -- it's in a box separate from the main fuse block -- look towards the passenger side, up against the firewall).
With the ignition on and engine off, and the relay removed, jumper the socket between 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock. These positions should be marked numbers 30 and 87 on the relay. You SHOULD hear the pump running. To test for pressure without a gauge, crack a banjo bolt at the fuel rail to see if fuel is being delivered. Any fuel pressure gauge requires a banjo adapter that fits inline to the rail. We could expect the actual pressure to be low if you were stuttering under load, so fuel is a good place to start.
Cheapest way to check for spark is remove plug, hold end against block and have someone crank. If this chassis is rust rotted, then expect the engine block ground strap to be weak which could contribute to the problem. Check spark against chassis or battery terminal instead.
